TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION LIBRARY

Clear docs for every technical need.

From a single manual to a full system library. Preview any template, then download it.

Technical Documentation Template

A versatile framework that serves as the central knowledge repository for your system — balancing high-level summaries with deep technical detail.

Formats: Word (.docx) • Google Docs • Markdown (.md) • PDF

Technical Specification Template

A complete engineering design captured before code is written — design objectives, functional specs, data models, API contracts and explicit non-goals.

Formats: Word (.docx) • Google Docs • Markdown (.md) • PDF

Technical Manual Template

A practical, user-oriented guide for admins and power users — configuration options, administrative settings, command lists and clear visual cues.

Formats: Word (.docx) • Google Docs • PDF

System Documentation Template

An exhaustive inventory of your infrastructure — network topologies, server configs, database settings and security boundaries for audits and DR.

Formats: Word (.docx) • Google Docs • Visio (.vsdx) • PDF

Installation Guide Template

A step-by-step deployment guide with prerequisites, dependencies, setup scripts and post-install checks — clean across Windows, macOS, Linux or containers.

Formats: Word (.docx) • Google Docs • Markdown (.md) • PDF

Troubleshooting Guide Template

A diagnostic playbook built on a symptom-cause-resolution flow — decision trees, error-code tables, log-analysis tips and clear escalation paths.

Formats: Word (.docx) • Google Docs • PDF

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Technical documentation FAQs.

What’s the difference between a technical specification and a technical manual?

A tech spec is written before a product is built — it’s the plan: architecture, API contracts, data models and system limits. A technical manual is written during or after the build, describing how to use, administer and configure the finished system.

Can these templates be adapted for hardware and software?

Yes. Every template is modular. Software projects use the API tables, JSON schemas and environment variables; hardware or IoT projects keep the assembly stages, power requirements and pinout tables and drop the web endpoints.

What file formats are supported?

Word (.docx), Google Docs, Markdown (.md), editable PDF, and Microsoft Visio (.vsdx) for the infrastructure templates — so your team can work in whatever tool it prefers.

Need technical documentation written for your team?

Templates are a great start — but scaling API references, runbooks and developer portals takes time away from building features. DSL’s technical writers work directly with your engineering and product teams to deliver clear, accurate, maintainable docs for your stack.
