QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

SOP FAQs.

Which SOP template should I use?

Match it to the task. Use Simple or Checklist SOP for basic routine tasks; Process or Standard SOP for multi-step workflows across teams; and Compliance SOP for heavily regulated environments.

What’s the difference between a simple and a standard SOP?

A Standard SOP is formal and comprehensive — roles, approval history, risk protocols — built for mission-critical processes that need audits and governance. A Simple SOP strips out the administrative overhead in favour of a short guide on how to get the job done.

When should I use a Visual SOP?

When the task is mostly about physical hand movements, spatial arrangement or navigating a software screen — assembling equipment, shipping, hardware repair, complex setups, or training team members with different primary languages.

How is an SOP different from a work instruction?

An SOP gives the broad overview of a process — what’s done, who does it, when and why. A work instruction is an in-depth description of one specific step within that SOP, like setting an instrument to a measurement or clicking a particular button.

Need SOPs written for your business?

Templates are a great start, but building a full library of procedures takes time your team may not have. DSL’s technical writers and process specialists map your workflows, standardize SOPs with your experts, and set up simple governance so your process docs stay valid and useful.
